John Lloyd

John is our Senior Partner. John has extensive experience in all types of litigation and insurance coverage matters. He has practiced in all areas of casualty insurance claims, including product, municipal, aviation, sports and professional liability. John has acted for gas utilities, soft drink manufacturers and bottlers, heavy equipment manufacturers, chemical and coatings manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies. John also has extensive experience in property insurance disputes, both first party and subrogated claims.

John was involved as counsel in the trilogy of cases dealing with the standard to be applied in interpreting faulty or improper design exclusions in policies of insurance: Foundation Co. of Canada Ltd. v. American Home Assurance Co., Algonquin Power (Long Sault) Partnership v. Chubb Insurance Co. of Canada, and Canadian National Railway Co. v. Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance Co. of Canada.

John has appeared as counsel at all levels of trial and appellate courts and at administrative tribunals in Ontario, including the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. He has also attended coroners’ inquests on behalf of clients.

John obtained his undergraduate degree from Queen’s University, majoring in Political Studies. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University in 1981.

John was selected by his peers to be included in the 2009 and 2010 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of Insurance Law.

John has spoken and written extensively regarding insurance coverage, litigation, and professional practice.

John is a long-time member of The Advocates’ Society.
